What wheel balancing involves

A wheel and tyre assembly is never perfectly even in weight. Balancing spins the wheel on a machine to find the heavy spot, then fits small counterweights to cancel it out. Without it you get vibration through the steering wheel or the seat at motorway speed, and tyres that wear out in patches long before they should.

Signs your wheels need balancing

• The steering wheel vibrates at a particular speed, often around 50–70mph
• Vibration through the seat or floor rather than the steering wheel, which usually points to the rear wheels
• The vibration appears at a set speed and eases off again above it
• Patchy or scalloped wear across the tyre tread
• You've recently hit a pothole or kerb
• A balance weight has come off the rim

What we do at the workshop

1. 1Remove each wheel and clean the rim, removing any old weights and built-up debris
2. 2Spin the wheel on our balancer to measure exactly where and how much weight is needed
3. 3Fit the correct counterweights — clip-on for steel wheels, adhesive weights for alloys so the finish isn't damaged
4. 4Re-spin to confirm the wheel runs true
5. 5Check the tyre for damage or uneven wear that could be causing the vibration instead
6. 6Refit and torque the wheels to the correct setting
