What wheel alignment / tracking involves

Wheel alignment is the set of angles your wheels sit at relative to the road and to each other. Kerbs, potholes and speed bumps knock those angles out over time. Once they're out, the tyres scrub sideways as you drive — which wears out the inner or outer edge fast, makes the car pull, and costs you fuel.

Signs your alignment is out

• The car pulls to the left or right on a flat, straight road
• The steering wheel sits off-centre when you're driving straight ahead
• One edge of a tyre is far more worn than the other
• A feathered or sawtooth pattern across the tread blocks
• The steering feels vague or doesn't self-centre after a turn
• You've recently hit a pothole, mounted a kerb, or had suspension work done

3. 3Measure the current alignment angles against your vehicle manufacturer's specification
4. 4Adjust the tracking and the other adjustable angles back into specification
5. 5Re-measure to confirm the settings
6. 6Road test where appropriate to confirm the car tracks straight
