What exhausts involves

Exhausts live a hard life — heat cycling, road salt and water all attack them from both sides. Most failures start as a pinhole or a corroded joint that turns into the unmistakable blowing sound. Beyond the noise, a leaking exhaust can let fumes in, upset the engine's sensors and hurt fuel economy, so it's worth fixing promptly.

Signs of an exhaust problem

• A deep droning, roaring or blowing noise, especially under acceleration
• A rattle from underneath, often a loose heat shield or a broken hanger
• Visible rust, holes or soot marks along the pipework or at a joint
• A smell of exhaust fumes inside the car
• The exhaust hanging low or knocking against the underside
• Noticeably worse fuel economy or a lit engine management light

2. 2Locate the leak precisely — it's often a joint or a corroded section, not the whole system
3. 3Replace mountings, hangers, clamps, gaskets or heat shields where those are the problem
4. 4Supply and fit replacement exhaust sections, back boxes and centre sections
5. 5Check for exhaust-related noises that are actually something else, so you don't pay for the wrong part
6. 6Run the engine and re-check for leaks before the car goes back to you
