What puncture repair involves

A nail or screw in the tread doesn't always mean a new tyre. We take the wheel off, remove the tyre from the rim and inspect it inside and out — the only way to tell whether a puncture is genuinely safe to repair. If it is, we plug and patch it properly from the inside and rebalance the wheel. If it isn't, we'll show you why and quote you for a replacement.

Signs you have a puncture

• The tyre pressure warning light comes on
• One tyre looks lower than the others, or needs topping up more often
• A visible nail, screw or piece of metal in the tread
• The steering pulls to one side, or the car feels unsettled at speed
• A hissing sound from a tyre after driving over debris
• The tyre goes flat overnight but seems fine after inflating

What we do at the workshop

1. 1Remove the wheel and locate the leak, often using a water bath to find slow leaks you can't see
2. 2Break the tyre off the rim and inspect the inner liner for hidden damage from driving on it flat
3. 3Repair inside the safely repairable central area of the tread using a combined plug-and-patch, following British Standard guidance
4. 4Refit, inflate to the correct pressure and rebalance the wheel
5. 5Check the valve and, where fitted, the TPMS sensor
6. 6Tell you straight away if the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder, where a repair is never safe
