What tpms sensors involves

Most cars built since around 2014 have a tyre pressure monitoring system. Each wheel carries a small battery-powered sensor that reports pressure to the car. The batteries are sealed and eventually die — typically after several years — which leaves a warning light on your dashboard even when the tyres are perfectly inflated. We can tell the difference between a genuine low tyre, a sensor that needs relearning to the car, and a sensor that's reached the end of its life.

Signs of a TPMS problem

• The tyre pressure warning light stays on after you've correctly inflated all four tyres
• The warning light flashes at start-up and then stays lit, which usually indicates a system fault rather than low pressure
• One wheel permanently shows no reading on the dashboard display
• The light appeared after new tyres or a wheel swap, so the sensors need relearning
• Winter or spare wheels fitted without sensors programmed to the car
• A sensor was damaged during a tyre change elsewhere

What we do at the workshop

2. 2Reset and relearn sensor IDs to the vehicle where the system just needs re-pairing
3. 3Supply and programme replacement sensors matched to your vehicle when a sensor has failed
4. 4Replace TPMS valve service kits — the seals, cores and caps — when tyres are changed
5. 5Refit, inflate to the correct pressures and confirm the dashboard light clears
6. 6Advise you if the fault is actually a slow puncture rather than the sensor
